Writes of Winter – Holiday Writing Contest

Fancy yourself a writer? Or, perhaps the chilly weather is tempting you to put pen to paper for the very first time. Either way, look no further than Red Deer Arts Council's Writes of Winter!

This entry-level writing contest invites Red Deer residents of all ages to submit Wintery or Holiday-themed poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction for the chance to win prizes and to have their work featured on the We Are Red Deer "Community Stories" page

Submissions should be shorter than 500 words, so why not spend an afternoon musing on every Central Albertan's favourite season?

The Arts Council is recruiting entries on two themes:

  • Holiday Season Story Contest, for all things festive, merry, and bright, with a submission deadline of December 10th, 2023
  • Winter Blues Story Contest, for all things cold, dark, and seasonal, with a submission deadline January 15th, 2024

For more details and to find the submission form, visit the Writes of Winter - Writing Contest page on the Red Deer Arts Council's website.

Ever feel like maybe you could use a little company to keep the words flowing? Not all of us are cut out to hunch over our typewriters by our lonesome!

Text reads National Novel Writing Month Write In. Calling all writers! Join us on Saturdays in November as we socialize, snack, and sprint our way to 50,000 words for this year's NaNoWriMo.

It's not too late to catch the final installment of our NaNoWriMo Write-Ins on November 25th, 2023 from 12:00pm to 3:30pm. Each Saturday in November we've invited all writers to join us as we socialize, snack, and sprint our way to 50,000 words for this year's National Novel Writing Month.

Part gathering and part write-in, the two and a half hours are sure to fly by with socializing, snacks, and sprints. For every 1000 words completed during this time, you’ll get to enter your name to win a writer’s prize bundle. So come hang with the herd, get some words in, and get out from the cold at this year’s final Write-In!
