Do I love summer? Well, no not really. I am not a hot weather gal -- and yet, I LOVE summer reading. My favourite place is to be on my front deck book in hand with my husky chilling beside me while conducting his neighbourhood watch.
There's this stereotypical idea that summer reads are full fluff -- and maybe they are?! (They are certainly fluffy for me sometimes.) But sometimes, they are just good. Subjectively, some of the best reads I've had, the ones I enjoy the most should be enjoyed on a deck, in the shade (for me), with a nosy husky.
IMMEDIATELY breaking my rules for subjective summer reading recommendations is that you need to watch the first season of True Detective in the summer. Not only is it the best one season of television to ever exist -- it feels hot, claustrophobic, creepy, and unsettling. I rewatch every summer and it NEVER disappoints.
Now is the literal perfect time to read the first book in The Scorched Throne duology as the second book has just been released! This is an Egyptian-inspired fantasy duology, and as a person who has long been intrigued by Egyptian mythology this duology was such an exciting find. I have not yet read the finale book, but I will be reading The Jasad Crown as part of my own personal summer reading journey.
Okay, so here is my first (but certainly not last) romance on this list. I love Nalini Singh's Psy-Changling Trinity series (book nine has just been released and I am *eagerly* awaiting for it to find its way into my hands.) Gives all that great old school paranormal romance while also having some sci-fi elements. Everything about this series just absolutely works for me. Note: This is a sequel series to her Psy-Changling series, and the perfect place to dive it.
This is the only book on the list that gives me the same feelings as True Detective even though there's basically no correlation. I love a southern mystery that feels twisty, and unnerving. This was my first from S.A. Cosby and has not been my last.
Are you looking for an actually very fun and breezy romantasy trilogy? Look no further -- Evie works for The Villain when hijinks and romance ensues. I am presently reading the second book and am enjoying the fun vibe just as much the second time!
Riley Sager is *extremely* hit or miss for me. However, I do often find myself reading his latest book in the summer. This one is his best (again, in my subjective opinion), and well worth a read if you like a slower mystery.
I feel like reading Judy Blume's Summer Sisters is a rite of girlhood passage. I remember reading it (likely at too young an age) after my sister whilst we were camping. I have read it more than once since. It is a bittersweet coming of age that was the first book I can remember feeling somewhat betrayed by at the end IYKYK.
I absolutely *needed* to have an old school Sandra Brown on my list. And candidly, if you can pick up her Slow Heat in Heaven at a used book store -- you should. But this is another of her best. I have read basically her whole backlist up to the mid 00's. I love her drama, her angst, her storytelling -- just everything.
What books feel like summer to you? And do you promise to watch True Detective?
