Tânsi! Taanishii! Boozhoo!
March 31 is National Indigenous Languages Day, opens a new window, a time to celebrate and honour the rich linguistic heritage of Indigenous peoples in Canada. With over 70 distinct Indigenous languages spoken by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities across the country, these languages are a vital part of Canada’s cultural fabric. However, according to UNESCO’s Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger, all Indigenous languages in Canada are considered at risk, with classifications ranging from vulnerable to critically endangered.
At the library, we recognize the importance of preserving and revitalizing these languages. To celebrate this important day, we invite you to explore the many Indigenous language resources available at the library:
1) Learn with Transparent Language

As part of Books & Bannock Book Club, we’re thrilled to host two very special author events: a virtual session with Waubgeshig Rice, opens a new window in May and an in-person event with Cree Nomad in June! You don't want to miss these events!
Celebrate Indigenous Language & Culture Every Day!
National Indigenous Languages Day is a meaningful opportunity to honour and uplift Indigenous languages, but the celebration shouldn’t stop here. By engaging with Indigenous language resources, participating in programs, and supporting Indigenous authors, we can all play a role in revitalization efforts. Let’s continue to celebrate and embrace Indigenous languages and cultures, not just today, but every day! Learn more at rdpl.org/indigenous, opens a new window.
