Monthly Highlights: November 2025

Red Deer Public Library's Monthly Highlights

Here are a few highlights from November 2025 at RDPL!

Storytime Success Moment

While working in the Children’s Department on a recent Saturday, RDPL staff member Simon was approached by a young Barrie Wilson School student and her mother. The child shared that she had seen him lead storytime and wanted to thank him for helping her learn to read. The interaction was a highlight of his day and a wonderful reminder of our impact on young learners!

Mini Canvas Collages with Teens

At Teen Cafe on November 18, we had 29 enthusiastic teens join us in making mini canvas collages. Here are some of the collages they made:

North Pole Stroll at the Library: What a Night!

On November 21, the library opened their doors until 7 p.m. and it was pure winter magic at the library. Thank you to everyone who made the detour from the park to spend part of your Downtown Red Deer North Pole Stroll with us. We loved having you here – watching the puppet shows, making crafts, doing a scavenger hunt, and meeting team Katja!

Katja had a wonderful time greeting so many kids, families, and longtime readers, plus plenty of new friends who met her for the first time. She was her gentle, friendly self with everyone, from tiny babies bundled up for the cold to grandparents stopping by after the lights in the park. It was a very busy three hours for our whole team since we had just under 400 people visiting the library!

Crafting of all Kinds!

Our evening craft programs at the Dawe Branch continued to shine in November, with wonderful turnout and engagement at both Sip ’n Stitch and Cozy Evenings. Sip ’n Stitch welcomed 18 knitters and crafters of all kinds, each working on their own projects in a relaxed, social atmosphere. Cozy Evenings, our intergenerational gathering where Ukrainian seniors come to connect, chat, and create, saw 10 participants making delicate handmade angels – perfect as thoughtful gifts or as new ornaments for the Christmas tree. One family even shared a photo of their angel already hanging proudly on their tree, a lovely reminder of how meaningful these shared creative moments can be.

Soveniatko Christmas Party

Soveniatko: Ukrainian Storytime celebrated a joyful Christmas Party filled with fun, games, puppet shows and festive activities. To finish the celebration on a sweet note, the kids decorated their own Christmas cookies. Everyone went home happy and excited.

Adult Literacy Program Highlights

The Adult Literacy Program welcomed 6 new tutors and 22 new learners in November. Twenty (20) pairs were matched with 152 learners still on the waitlist. In order to provide some learning opportunities to individuals on the waitlist, the Adult Literacy Program offered 9 language learning classes. These classes accommodated the needs of 170 learners of different levels of English language learning.

Best Comment Ever!

During a recent Stories and More program at the Timberlands Branch, a parent commented that the library is their child’s favourite place, adding, “Who needs Disneyland when you have a library?”

Dino Fun at the Library

November’s Family STEAM night focused on dinosaurs and dinosaur science. Participants made fossil molds, measured dinosaurs and compared their own size with that of various dinosaurs, thawed dinosaurs frozen in ice and learned about dinosaur teeth!
