  • Palace Project

The Palace Project is an e-reading experience developed by and for libraries, and RDPL is one of the first libraries in Canada to pilot this new tool. Some of the key advantages of the Palace App include:

    • The ability for us to merge digital content from multiple sources into one app.
    • Access to special curated collections of always-available content (no holds required!), including over 5000 audiobooks and over 1000 Indie Author titles. These collections are only available in the Palace App!
    • The possibility of adding even more content that was previously unavailable to public libraries, including Audible Exclusive titles.

Palace is still in early development, so check back often for updates, app improvements, and new content.

Within the Palace App, you will come across eBooks and eAudiobooks from multiple sources. Depending on the collection, loan periods vary:

The Indie Author Project features top indie-published books in adult and young adult fiction. The books are curated by Library Journal and library editorial boards in regions across North America and were chosen by editors and librarians from thousands of submissions. The collection features NY Times and USA Today best-selling authors and numerous award winners. All eBooks are circulated sustainably in an unlimited, simultaneous use model to library users, so there are no holds or wait times required!

The Always Available Audiobook collection in the Palace App includes over 5000 titles in the following genres:

    • Children’s/YA
    • Christian/Inspirational/Religious
    • Classics
    • Spanish Language
    • Innovative Learning
    • Westerns

The Unlimited Listens model brings in fresh content each month from popular authors, with new titles released monthly and added to our collection. Items are available with an unlimited, simultaneous use access model, so there are no holds or wait times required!

The Palace Bookshelf is a collection of free open access and public domain titles.

By tapping on the Palace logo in the top left corner of the app (or by clicking on Settings >> Libraries), The Palace Bookshelf appears first when you tap Add Library. After the Palace Bookshelf has been added to your list of libraries, the Palace logo can be used to switch between RDPL’s digital collection and the Palace Bookshelf collection.

We currently do not have Audible Exclusive titles, but we are exploring this possibility. In the meantime, you can find thousands of Always Available audiobooks in the Palace App (no holds required!), as well as our collection of Libby by OverDrive titles (regular wait times and hold/checkout limits apply on those titles).

Yes! Even when your checkout limit on Libby by OverDrive titles has been reached, you can still borrow additional materials from the Always Available Audiobook collection, the Indie Author Project collection, or the Palace Bookshelf. These collections have no hold or checkout limits.

If you are notified that you have reached your limit, it is because the item you are trying to borrow is from the Libby by OverDrive collection.

A Libby by OverDrive title may take up to 15 minutes to sync over to The Palace Project App when borrowed.

Note that Libby by OverDrive magazines and “Hot Picks” 7-day loan titles are not currently compatible with The Palace Project App and won’t be displayed.

  • Libby/Overdrive

Unfortunately, not right now. At the current time, Amazon does not sell Kindle-compatible ebooks to Canadian libraries.

Publishers sell us eBooks with the stipulation that each copy of the book is loaned to only one user at a time, just like a physical book.

Absolutely! If you’re done a book early, you don’t have to wait for the automatic return. The next person on the hold list thanks you!

    • Go to 'Shelf' > 'Loans.'
    • Tap 'Manage Loan.'
    • Tap 'Return Early,' then 'Return.'

Yes! You can renew items in Libby in the last few days of a loan so long as no one else has a hold on that item.

    • Go to 'Shelf' > 'Loans.'
    • Tap 'Manage Loan.'
    • Tap 'Renew Loan,' then 'Renew.'

If you see a book you would like, just click the “Place Hold” button. Tap the calendar next to it to see how many people are ahead of you and the approximate waiting period. If you’re unsure if you’d like the book, you can always use the “Read Sample” button to read the first few pages or hear the first couple minutes of the book.

Books on Libby are checked out for 21 days automatically, but you can also choose shorter loan periods.

You can have 10 items checked out at a time on Libby and up to 10 holds.

Start by downloading the Libby app from the Google Play, Apple App or Windows 10 store. Log in using the directions and sign out a book. If you are on Wi-Fi, the book automatically downloads to your device for offline use.
