About the Palace Project App

Introducing the Palace Project, an e-reading experience developed by and for libraries. RDPL is proud to be among the first libraries in Canada to pilot the Palace App, alongside Vancouver Public Library and Edmonton Public Library.

With the Palace app, you have access to many of the library’s digital collections in one place. Enjoy special curated collections available exclusively in the app, including 5000+ Always Available Audiobooks and 1000+ eBooks in the Indie Author collection (no holds required!). You can also access thousands of free books from the Palace Bookshelf, a collection of public domain and open access titles. And lastly, you can find most of our popular Libby by OverDrive titles right in the Palace App, making it a one-stop shop for all of your favourite digital content!

How to Use the App

Getting Started with The Palace Project

Download

The Palace Project app is available in both the Apple App Store, opens a new window for iOS phones and tablets and the Google Play Store, opens a new window for Android phones and tablets.

Connect

Open the Palace app, tap “Find Your Library,” and type or scroll to find your library’s name to access their collection of ebooks and audiobooks.

Browse

Browse available titles by selecting any of the headings to view additional or related titles. Or, search for a specific title by selecting the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the screen.

Borrow

Select the desired title and click “Get.” If your book is currently unavailable, click “Reserve” to place a hold. After choosing to get or reserve a title for the first time, you will be prompted to sign in with your barcode number and password/PIN.

Read!

Once your book has been downloaded, click “Read” or “Listen” and enjoy! Borrowed titles can be easily accessed by selecting “My Books” at the bottom of the screen.

  • The Palace Project is an e-reading experience developed by and for libraries, and RDPL is one of the first libraries in Canada to pilot this new tool. Some of the key advantages of the Palace App include:

    • The ability for us to merge digital content from multiple sources into one app.
    • Access to special curated collections of always-available content (no holds required!), including over 5000 audiobooks and over 1000 Indie Author titles. These collections are only available in the Palace App!
    • The possibility of adding even more content that was previously unavailable to public libraries, including Audible Exclusive titles. 

    Palace is still in early development, so check back often for updates, app improvements, and new content. 

  • Within the Palace App, you will come across eBooks and eAudiobooks from multiple sources. Depending on the collection, loan periods vary:

  • The Indie Author Project features top indie-published books in adult and young adult fiction. The books are curated by Library Journal and library editorial boards in regions across North America and were chosen by editors and librarians from thousands of submissions. The collection features NY Times and USA Today best-selling authors and numerous award winners. All eBooks are circulated sustainably in an unlimited, simultaneous use model to library users, so there are no holds or wait times required!

  • The Always Available Audiobook collection in the Palace App includes over 5000 titles in the following genres:

    • Children’s/YA
    • Christian/Inspirational/Religious
    • Classics
    • Spanish Language
    • Innovative Learning
    • Westerns

    The Unlimited Listens model brings in fresh content each month from popular authors, with new titles released monthly and added to our collection. Items are available with an unlimited, simultaneous use access model, so there are no holds or wait times required!

  • The Palace Bookshelf is a collection of free open access and public domain titles. 

    By tapping on the Palace logo in the top left corner of the app (or by clicking on Settings >> Libraries), The Palace Bookshelf appears first when you tap Add Library. After the Palace Bookshelf has been added to your list of libraries, the Palace logo can be used to switch between RDPL’s digital collection and the Palace Bookshelf collection.

  • We currently do not have Audible Exclusive titles, but we are exploring this possibility. In the meantime, you can find thousands of Always Available audiobooks in the Palace App (no holds required!), as well as our collection of Libby by OverDrive titles (regular wait times and hold/checkout limits apply on those titles).

  • Yes! Even when your checkout limit on Libby by OverDrive titles has been reached, you can still borrow additional materials from the Always Available Audiobook collection, the Indie Author Project collection, or the Palace Bookshelf. These collections have no hold or checkout limits.

    If you are notified that you have reached your limit, it is because the item you are trying to borrow is from the Libby by OverDrive collection.

  • A Libby by OverDrive title may take up to 15 minutes to sync over to The Palace Project App when borrowed. 

    Note that Libby by OverDrive magazines and “Hot Picks” 7-day loan titles are not currently compatible with The Palace Project App and won’t be displayed.
