Canadian Library Workers’ Day: A Message from our Board Chair

A Message from RDPL Board Chair Laura Thevenaz

As we recognize that October is Canadian Library Month, and October 16th as Library Workers’ Day, the RDPL Board would like to take a moment to extend our gratitude to our incredible staff for all they do for the Library and our community.

Through this past year, Library staff have created some amazing moments that showcase what they do – from viral social media videos, building transformative community relationships, to the life-changing Adult Literacy Program – there is so much more to share and these few programs don’t come close to covering all they do.

That said, this year has also had difficult moments. From the challenges and uncertainty surrounding Bill 28 to the broader social issues our City (and many other cities) continue to navigate, libraries and the people who work in them have faced a lot. Through it all, RDPL’s staff have continued to show up with grace and compassion for our community, providing not just amazing programs, resources and services, but also a welcoming space where people from all walks of life can connect, learn, and feel they belong. The work our Library staff do every day makes a real difference in the lives of Red Deerians, often in ways people never fully seen.

Libraries are about so much more than books. They are about people, opportunity, inclusion, and community.

On behalf of the RDPL Board, thank you to all RDPL’s staff for your dedication, professionalism, compassion, and resilience. Your work strengthens our Library and our entire community.

We are deeply grateful for all you do – especially when the work is difficult. You make a difference every day, and we are proud to stand behind you. Thank you for being the heart of our library.

Please join us in celebrating Canadian Library Month and Library Workers’ Day.  Feel free to share a few kind words, or a story about how libraries have impacted your life in the comments.
