Monthly Highlights: June 2026

Red Deer Public Library's Monthly Highlights

Here are a few highlights from June 2026 at RDPL!

Preloaded Audio Players

If you or someone you know requires an accessible audio format, the Library now lends preloaded audio players! The small Envoy Connect player is in a kit with an instruction sheet, list of titles preloaded on it and a charging cable. There is a solar panel on the device to allow you to slowly charge it too.  Each kit has ten similar titles.  The kits can be borrowed by any member with an Accessible Card. Thanks to the Gaetz United Church Women's Group for their donation of $500 towards these kits.  So far we have Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Thrillers and Western Fiction kits. Please check the catalogue for the list of titles preloaded on these players.  We will be refreshing the titles from time to time.

Teen Café in June

At Teen Café on June 2, we made rainbow heart garlands to use at the Queer Prom. The teens locked in and one even made 19 heart garlands in 75 minutes! Way to go!

Canadian Multiculturalism Day

Our very first Canadian Multiculturalism Day celebration on June 27 was a wonderful success. Eighty-eight community members joined us to explore and celebrate bread traditions shared by five cultural groups. The event was filled with meaningful conversations, delicious food, and new connections, and we were delighted to receive this thoughtful note afterward:

"Thank you for organizing such a lovely 'Breads from Around the World' event. We enjoyed it so much!"  – John and Vivian Adsett

Summer Reading Club Kick-Off Party

June kicked off a summer of reading and active fun with our biggest-ever Summer Reading Club Kick-Off Party at Red Deer Public Library. As one of five programs presented in support of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, the celebration welcomed a record-breaking 585 participants, making it the library's most attended active living event of the month. Families enjoyed a variety of dinosaur-themed activities while registering for the Summer Reading Club and discovering all that the library has to offer. Together, the library's five ParticipACTION events inspired active living and community connection, engaging 1,095 participants throughout June and helping support Red Deer's goal of remaining one of Canada's most active communities.

Youth Literacy Program: Celebration of Learning

June marked the conclusion of another successful year for the Youth Literacy Program as learners, tutors, and families gathered at Red Deer Public Library to celebrate the achievements of the 2025–2026 program. This year's Celebration of Learning featured a fun-filled Minute to Win It theme, with families working together to complete a series of lively challenges that encouraged teamwork, laughter, and friendly competition. The event was a joyful way to recognize the dedication and growth of our learners and volunteers while celebrating another year of building literacy skills, confidence, and community connections.

The program will run again during the school year beginning in September 2026

Cozy Evenings: Meditation Jars on the Patio

June's Cozy Evenings program took advantage of the beautiful summer weather as participants gathered on the Dawe Branch patio of Red Deer Public Library to create colourful meditation jars. Filled with glitter, water, and vibrant decorations, the jars offer a simple mindfulness tool to encourage relaxation and reflection. The lush patio provided the perfect setting for an evening of creativity, conversation, and connection, giving participants a chance to slow down and enjoy the peaceful surroundings while welcoming the arrival of summer.

We hope you enjoyed our June 2026 highlights!
