Here are a few highlights from April 2026 at RDPL!
Teen and Tween Cafés in April
At Teen Café on April 21, Claire and Simon held a LEGO challenge. Here are a few of the creations made by the teens!

At Tween Café on April 29, the kids took part in a Ravenous, Ravenous Raptors tournament. Eight ferocious raptors competed to see who could eat the most marbles. Leo progressed through the ranks and won all three of his matches. Selina placed second with two wins. Simon was knocked out in the first round!

Jungle Adventure
April 21st was a busy day! Olha and Saraf hosted a Jungle Adventure, where families traversed through the jungle to help out all the animals. They watched puppet shows and made adorable crafts, like crafting a crocodile and helping it cross the river, elephants to share with their friends, and tigers to tuck into bed. After escaping the lion’s den obstacle course, all the kids ended their day with a Jungle Jamboree – a dance party to celebrate their fun adventure in the jungle!

Elementary School Connections
Merci to Ecole la Prairie for inviting RDPL to speak to your very engaged and respectful elementary classes about our resources, programs, and services! We had a blast speaking to your students and look forward to seeing them at the library!
The Timberlands Branch participated in our partner school Ecole Barrie Wilson School’s open house on April 15, with RDPL’s facility dog Katja attending as a special guest. Thank you to EBWS for inviting us – we love to see the library bustling with activity, and Katja enjoyed all the love from current and new school families!
Cozy Evenings: Spring Wreaths
April’s Cozy Evenings program welcomed participants to a creative and hopeful session as they crafted spring wreaths for their doors at the Dawe Branch. Using a variety of materials and personal touches, each wreath reflected a shared anticipation for the arrival of warmer days. The evening offered a relaxed and cheerful space to connect, create, and celebrate the promise of spring together.

Team Katja Outreach: Service Dogs 101
Katja took learning on the road in April with a special Service Dogs 101 visit to a Foundations class at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. Students engaged with thoughtful and insightful questions about Katja’s role as a facility dog at Red Deer Public Library, making it one of her most memorable visits yet – earning an A+ for curiosity and engagement. The session highlighted the important work service dogs do and left a lasting impression on both students and staff.

Bandit’s Ultimate Book Championship
RDPL staff enthusiastically provided Ecole Barrie Wilson School with a longlist for Bandit’s Ultimate Book Championship, which focused on picture books by Canadian authors this year. Eight fantastic titles battled it out with EBWS classes voting for their favourites, but Are You a Cheeseburger by Monica Arnaldo emerged as the winner.
Dino 101
These are some of the clever and curious members of the Dino 101: Dinosaur Paleobiology course. They completed this comprehensive overview of non-avian dinosaurs in twelve weeks. The course is one of the many Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) courses offered by University of Alberta. The class met weekly to review the module videos and readings as a group and complete the online course together. University of Alberta lecturer, Gavin Bradley, who teaches introductory paleontology classes and is the coordinator of the Faculty of Science MOOCs met with the class from time to time for some Q & A and to share more of his expertise on dinosaurs. Gavin will be speaking at the Library on Saturday, May 9.
