Make a difference in our community by volunteering on the Red Deer Library Board!

The City of Red Deer is now accepting applications for their Council Committees, opens a new window, including the Library Board, opens a new window. Join us and be a part of Red Deer Public Library, a place where everyone is welcome to visit, to learn, to be entertained, to engage with their community, and to discover new things!

What does the Library Board do?

The Library Board, opens a new window is an autonomous legal entity governed by the Alberta Libraries Act, which speaks and has authority for the library. It is responsible for the management, regulation and control of the library. This involves the setting of policy, identification of the community's needs, development of long and short-term plans, promotion of the library in the community, and the establishment of an annual budget.

What skills are required?

Applicants should:

  • Understand the community and its needs.
  • Be committed to upholding public library values, including intellectual freedom.
  • Be willing to commit time to board meetings, committee meetings, planning sessions, and special events.
  • Be willing to learn and use modern technology, including tablets and other electronic devices.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Be willing to represent the library in the community.
  • Have a strong desire to make a difference.

What is the time commitment?

Term: Staggered, three year term.

Meetings: Board meetings take place on the last Wednesday of each month (except July, August, and December) at 6:30 p.m., for approximately two hours. In addition, Board members attend one of two sub-committee meetings per month. Sub-committee meeting times are determined by the Board in consultation with members. Board members will also be present at Board planning sessions (typically one Saturday per year) and may represent the library by attending or participating in various library or community events.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.
