About It's Coco!
View Showtimes
Inspired by the incredible true story of a woman who rose from poverty and abandonment to create one of the world’s most successful and iconic brands.
The production of It's Coco! follows the story of Coco Chanel. Told with instrument and voice, the opera highlights how Coco, abandoned after the death of her mother, began to make a productive life for herself. Her development began with sewing work in an orphanage and culminated in the founding of her iconic fashion house.
The opera was written by our very own Cheryl Cooney (from Red Deer) and Anna Maria Kaufman (originally from Lacombe) and will be presented for the very first time in June at the Scott Block Theatre in Red Deer. Anna Maria will perform the role of Coco Chanel.
The local production is also part of the restart of the local theatre scene in Red Deer and will engage local performance and production talent wherever possible.
The music parallels stylistic trends of French cabaret, contemporary English opera, North American film, as well as expressionism inherent in the nascent German operatic boom prior to World War II.

About Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel forged the unprecedented path of an independent businesswoman throughout the upheavals of the 20th century.
Her name, and her brand, reign to this day.
A rock star in the fashion world, Chanel was lured to Hollywood under the auspices of Samuel Goldwyn to costume such film stars as Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich. She costumed the Ballet Russes dancers, inspired painters, impresarios and composers, all who are glimpsed through dance elements, lyrics, and musical parody.
In this production, Chanel’s many successes are punctuated by the tragedy, mystery, and passion in her personal and professional life.
